Wrap the lower third of each cup in string. Pictured is that cheap recycle plastic-string stuff that cardboard is tied with before it is put out as trash, so is readily available. I found it quicker to cut out the head decorations myself half a dozen at a time than reasonably expect children to cut them out precisely.

Note in this picture that the dolls are displayed on milk cartons wrapped in red craft paper, then trimmed in origami paper. Be sure to collect the milk cartons you need well in advance. Tip: Ask the kitchen staff, and cleaning staff to collect milk cartons and toilet rolls for you throughout the year. These are the corner stone of many a craft and is eco too.

Hinamatsuri, also known as Girls' Day or the Doll Festival, is a traditional Japanese festival celebrated on March 3 every year during which families pray for the health and happiness of their young girls.

• Paper cups. Not plastic as glue doesn't adhere so well.
• String: red, blue, pink.
• Milk cart: 1 per dolls
